Philosopher Jacques Lacan's discourse on 'Television' took the form of an interview that aired in 1973 on the French government TV network O.R.T.F. under the title, Psychoanalysis. As part of our ongoing storefront video series, we are "re-broadcasting" an edited version of 'Television' with English subtitles.
The video is being displayed in conjunction with "My Lacan is Burning: Revisiting 'Television'", an event on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 from 6:30-8:30pm at Slought Foundation. In a style that is typical of Lacan's own playful, impassioned, and evasive seminar style, we invited theorists Catherine Liu and Charles Shepherdson to engage in a public discussion on the broadcast, introduced and moderated by Lacanian theorist Jean-Michel Rabaté, Slought Foundation Senior Curator and Editor of the Cambridge Guide to Lacan (2003). This discussion addressed Lacan's broadcast in relation to the history of the political left, religious fundamentalism, and the rise of racism.
